Treatment depends on the type of infection.

If it is a bacterial infection, your health care provider may prescribe antibiotic pills or drops. If it is a viral infection, it may have to run its course. However, an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen, can provide relief.

More serious and frequent ear infections may require drainage tubes.
